Military Helmet

ca. 550 BCE

With its characteristic rounded profile, almond-shaped eyeholes and straight nose guard, this helmet is representative of the military aesthetic of the Greek Archaic period. It was part of the equipment of the hoplite infantry that gradually came to replace cavalry from 700 BCE. Covering the face almost entirely, in combination with the cuirass, shield and greaves, it met the warriors’ need for maximum protection.
