Seated Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin)
ca. 1050-1150
This large sculpture of a Buddhist figure represents the divinity Guanyin, who became very popular during the Song dynasty (970–1125). Associated with compassion, he makes the gesture of fearlessness with his right hand. The details of his clothing are a reminder of the princely status that the historic Buddha renounced.
